Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23
King David, a man after Almighty God’s own heart, wrote these words under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. They are words that you and I MUST take to heart. Notice, King David acknowledged his own need for introspection. Did you know, that the Almighty knows your heart better than you do? It does not matter how old we become, there needs to be an ongoing self-examination of our innermost thoughts. The Psalmist was acknowledging the possibility of some sort of evil existing in his heart and thoughts.
Do you realize, that you may have some sort of evil hidden in your heart and/or thoughts?
Very recently, the Almighty put His finger on something in my heart that was displeasing to Him. He patiently and firmly started that process some time ago and it took me quite a while to hear Him clearly. Almighty God has a way of getting through to us and it is our duty to listen and respond. I am just as human as the next person and my fallen nature is just as corrupt as yours is. When we realize that something sinful needs to be rooted out of our lives, we must not resist.
Notice, the Psalmist points out the need to be led in the way of eternal life. Surely you understand, that King David was already a Godly man. Even though he was a very Godly man, his heart was susceptible to sin the same as yours and mine. Don’t you think for one second, that all there is to being a Christian is saying the sinner’s prayer. Like King David, the Almighty may desire to root some sin out of your life. If you do not allow the Almighty to work on you in this fashion, then you will be placing your soul in grave danger. Resisting the Holy Spirit is foolish indeed.
Proverbs 28:13, “He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but whoso CONFESSES AND FORSAKES them shall have mercy.”
There are three very important factors for the Christian to live by and we must not disregard them. We are to do justly and love mercy and walk humbly with Almighty God. The Almighty’s justice is very sobering. He requires us to live this way. He is more than willing to extend us His mercy and my oh my how I need His mercy. We are to walk humbly before Him. We are not to be proud and arrogant, but always realizing we are nothing without Him.
