“Now we beseech you brethren by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and by our gathering together unto Him, that you be not soon shaken in mind or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”
It is extremely important that Christians understand this passage. The Holy Spirit warns us not to be deceived concerning the time of Christ’s return. He warns us in this fashion because there is grave danger. A person who has wrong information about an important event could easily miss the event, become discouraged as a result of an unanticipated wait, be distracted from vigilance, fall to sleep over time, be led astray by misinformation, etc. Notice at the beginning of the passage under consideration, that the Holy Spirit is addressing believers concerning the coming of Christ and concerning our being gathered together unto Him. He gives us additional information concerning the “Day of Christ”, and tells us that two things must take place before that day. Number one He mentions a “falling away”. This phrase “falling away” is from the word apostasy and it means “defection from the truth”. So we have some important information here. Before the Day of Christ comes, there will be people who defect from the truth. They are traitors. They will betray Almighty God by going away from His truth. How very sad this is! Apparently they will fall prey to deception.
I wonder if that person will be you? I sure hope not, and that is why I am here to warn you to not be deceived.
The second thing that will happen before the “Day of Christ” is this: the man of sin or son of perdition will be exposed. This man is none other than the anti-christ. Please notice verse 4: “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he as God sits in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” This son of perdition will sit in Almighty God’s temple and he will claim to be Almighty God. This passage clearly informs us that the temple will once again be built. There is no amount of diplomacy or deal-making by politicians that will prevent the temple from being rebuilt, but let us return to our subject at hand. The Holy Spirit is warning us to not be deceived into believing, that Christ will come before the son of perdition is revealed. There are many out there telling us, that Christians will not go through any of the Great Tribulation, but you have read it for yourself: there will be a defection from the truth and the son of perdition will be exposed before the Day of Christ. Many preachers and pastors are telling believers, that we are going to be raptured before the tribulation. This is a dangerous teaching and the Holy Spirit says: Let no man deceive you by any means. I am not saying, that these preachers, teachers and pastors are deceiving on purpose. Many of them seem to be very sincere; nevertheless, you must take careful precaution not to be deceived by them. Your soul is at stake here. If you live to the coming of Christ, then you will also be here when the son of perdition is exposed. Notice the rest of this passage in II Thessalonians chapter 2:
“Remember you not , that when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity does already work, only he who now restraineth will restrain until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked One be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming: even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”
I know that this passage is rather lengthy, but I needed you to read if for my last point. Some say that the church is what is restraining the revealing of anti-Christ. How can this possibly be true, when verse 3 tells us clearly, that the son of perdition will be revealed before the Day of Christ? Does the Holy Bible contradict itself? Of course the answer is no. The son of perdition will be exposed before the Day of Christ. I hope you understand now, how important it is for you to not be deceived. If you find yourself in the seven year tribulation, do not cast off your faith. Do not allow yourself to be one of those people who defect from the truth. Your soul depends on it. At the very least give yourself permission to believe, that things may not turn out the way you thought they would. If you will do this, then you will not be caught off guard by Satan and the son of perdition.
